Doctor Who
Doctor who is a science fiction British TV series that is widely known across the world. It is created by BBC and has been made since 1963. The Doctor Who aired from 1963 till 1989 and then stopped airing till 2005 and then relaunched and is still played till today. The main character of Doctor Who is played by different people throughout the series which allows the Series to keep airing for a long period of time. This is possible because doctor who is known for reincarnating himself which allows the process of different actors acting this part possible.
This TV series is widely popular among the British culture and very significant. It is watched by most families since it's considered a family friendly show with the science fiction genre which appeals to younger audiences as well as older audiences. The show brings around 3-5 million and 16 million viewers which is constant throughout all the episodes. Even though the show was very popular it had a big competition with coronation street which aired during the 1980 which affected Doctor Who and therefore they had to stop for around 18 months until they aired again due to the competition. However the revival of the show in 2005 pulled an average of 10.8 million viewers. However in 1982 the show was being constantly watched internationally by 88 million viewers in 38 different countries, and the number probably would've risen even more now since it can be accessed through different online websites and programmed.
Doctor Who costs around 10-13 million US dollars per season, and an average of 769,231 US dollars per episode to create. However it earns around 253,000 to 281,000 US dollars and the income varies on different parts of the UK region, as some places have a higher watching rate of Doctor Who than others. However the show only costed 100,000 US dollars to produce during the 80's which is a drastic increase in cost to make.
History
Doctor Who first aired on 1963 a day after John F.Kennedy was assassinated and therefore the first episode was 80 seconds late to the original schedule planned. During the 1960's it was the period where Britain changed vastly.

Life during 1960
During the 1960's a lot of things changed. Technology evolved a lot, from the person going to the moon in 1969 and also the shows that used to be showed as black and white were now in colour since Technicolours were introduced.
Also, music vastly changed in the 1960's, rock and roll became very popular and appealed mostly to teenagers, bands like 'The Beatles' were also popular. The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones experimented with new sounds and develop innovative pieces of music. Their later albums included lyrics encouraging rebellion against the authorities, as seen in ‘Revolution’. Young people began to stand up for their beliefs and their individuality. After the World War teenagers had more freedom and also rebelled because after not having much freedom in the World War since they were working but after that they rebelled an started wearing whatever what they want and also listen to whatever music they wanted to. Clothes also changed, converse became a thing that teenagers would wear and mini skirts evolved from long skirts that their parents might have worn. By the early 1960's, teenagers were already significantly different to those of a decade ago.

Propp's theory was that in every narrative there are different types of charterers. He also said that fairy tales had a specific narrative structure. These were:
- Hero The protagonist in the narrative, and usually seeks something.
- Villain The antagonist in the narrative, who struggles against the Hero.
- Donor/Mentor Sends the Hero in the right direction.
- Helper Aids the Hero, usually in his/her quest
- Dispatcher Prepares/provides the Hero with an agent/object.
- False Hero Claims to be the Hero/portrayed as the Hero but is not, usually reaps what he sows.
- Princess's Father Rewards the Hero, usually attempts to marry him to his daughter
- Princess Damsel in distress/the reward for the Hero usually the prize of the Hero's quest.
Propp's theory in Doctor Who.
Vladimir Propp's character theory suggested that in every narrative there are different types of charterers. He also said that fairy tales had a specific narrative structure. He found all narratives share the same structure with the same characters, believing the characters and actions shaped the narrative. He found all narratives share the same structure with the same characters, believing the characters and actions shaped the narrative.
In most TV series and movies Propp's theory is used since it's a very popular theory and is widely used. The idea of always having certain characters play a certain role in a series or a movie is well presented in Doctor Who. In Doctor Who, there is a clear role for each player.
An unearthly child was the first Doctor Who episode that ever came out. It was broadcast on the 23rd of November in 1963. Also in this story, the Propp Theory can be used. Of course the hero of this story is Doctor Who, he is the one that the audience follows throughout the narrative. He is the one that saves the day from all kinds of problems. Susan, the granddaughter of the Doctor, is the helper. She helps the Doctor in his adventures. I think it's hard to decide what Ian and Barbara would be in the Propp Theory as they could be that Ian and Barbara are the dispatchers, because thanks to them the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara are going on a adventure or Ian could be the false hero and Barbra could be the princess. In the episode "An unearthly child" of Doctor Who we are presented with 4 main characters: the princess who was the older daughter ,the grandfather who was the hero/father, the younger daughter who was the helper, the man who was the false hero and the robots who were the villains but I would also argue that Susan and Ian are dispatchers in this particular episode.

BBC commissioning- link to Doctor Who
What is commissioning and how does it work ?
Commissioning is when a writer or producer comes up with an idea and wants to produce it. They then write a proposal and send it off via internet or they pitch their idea to a production company or to the broadcaster directly. The BBC also have another form of commissioning this is called 'the writers room.' This is when a writer writes a script, sends it off and someone else produces it because the writer doesn't want to.
There are many ways of commissioning your idea even if it's by email or having to fill out an application form but this is the basic commissioning process in simple steps.
1. The writer will think of an idea and write a proposal
2. The writer will then organise a meeting with a production or broadcast company to arrange their pitch.
3. If the pitch is agreed then the production company may also have to go to a broadcaster.
4. Develop a production team. This could consist of a director, health and safety, presenter, researcher, editor and production manager.
5. The writer has to write a script whilst the director has to write a storyboard. If there are any changes to the script it could be done during the production process.
6. Once the programme is finished the production team shows it to the broadcaster to see whether there are changes to be made and if not the programme gets viewed on TV.
Why does the BBC not commission Doctor Who from an external production company?
The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has a board of governing members and is independent of government intervention. This means that it can produce content free impartially. Look at the end of many programmes and you will see a logo for a production company who have made the programme (paid for by the BBC). The BBC commissions programmes from external companies as well as producing their own programmes. Doctor Who, on the other hand, is produced exclusively by the BBC as it such a flagship programme for the Corporation. They want and need to retain ownership, editorial and merchandising control.

CSP: Class (2016)
Class analysis
The Doctor Who spin off show, Class, was released the 22nd October 2016. The final episode was released on the 3rd December 2016 after there being eight episodes released.
It was set in Coal Hill School which was the school that Susan attended in the first episode of Doctor Who in 1963. The school was also seen later in series 8 and series 9 as Clara Oswald and Danny Pink worked there and the twelfth doctor worked undercover as a caretaker.
Class was aimed at a young adult audience and contained violence, language and sexual content.
The audience that Class was aimed at was not very clear
The doctor who spin off 'Class' did not make the top fifty on-demand programs for its first four weeks. It had disappointing rates. This was partly due to the way the show was released. When first released it was not broadcast on television. Instead, it was released on BBC three which was a website and their was a plan for them to air on BBC one later on. The show was also released in Canada and Australia. The spin-off show couldn't be watched everywhere and so the audience was limited. Also the showing in America was delayed until spring so their was less hype about Class.
The Series had 8 episodes. The first was released on 22nd of August 2016, however it ended on the 3rd of December 2016. The programme is set in Coal Hill Academy, focuses on six of its students and staff members. It is a fictional school that has been featured in Doctor Who since the 1963 serial, An Unearthly Child. The sixth formers of Coal Hill Academy all have their own secrets and desires. They have to deal with the stresses of everyday life. The Doctor and his time-travelling have made the walls of space and time stretch thin, and monsters beyond imagination are planning to break through and wreak havoc upon the Earth.
However, the series got some mixed views. It was praised for its lighting, sound, acting and the darkness of it. However, it scored poor view ship figures from its broadcast on BBC One. Therefore,In September, BBC Three conformed it was going to be cancelled.
The audience was expected to be young viewers. However, Class failed to secure over 1 million viewers at any point when repeated on BBC One in a late-evening slot across January and February, and failed to make the BBC iPlayer Top 20 in its first seven weeks, and failed to secure over 1m viewers at any point when repeated on BBC One in a late-evening slot across January and February. In fact, the series finale could only manage a consolidated audience of 0.32 million, with Patrick Ness publicly stating that he was "baffled" by the decision to air the series in double-bills, late at night, more than two months after its BBC Three debut.
The Cost to produce Class was
The audience was really limited as parents didn't want their young kids to watch it because it is inappropriate for their age. Class was aimed at a teenagers. I know that because the actors are mainly young adults aged between 19-25 -signifies a lack of experience- which is why some people think that their acting was a bit overwrought. Since we tend to watch series with actors older than us/roughly our age, the middle aged people didn't watch it. Class had a really unnecessary and unjustified use of sexual content like the gay couple which resulted in some complaints by homophobic people and this is why the show isn't for kids and is specifically aimed a teenagers. The reason why class wasn't very popular is because it was more 'earthly' because it was based on earth while in Dr.Who we can actually escape this world as some people watch it for diverging and escaping routines according to the Uses and Gratifications theory. And if we do look for change, we will need an unearthly setting in an unfamiliar area with sci-fi colours like green and blue which exist in Dr.Who. So people preferred to watch Dr.Who than watch class. Class failed to reach the BBC iplayer top 20 during the first seven weeks and failed to secure 1 million viewers when it was shown on BBC One although it was slotted for a late-evening show which is when they are allowed to show content unsuitable for kids as they will be asleep. Teenagers might be under stress due to A levels and university work so might not stay up just to watch this show, no matter how good it is because they need several hours of sleep to do well. It was released on BBC Three online first then on BBC One but it scored poor viewership which resulted in ending the programmer only one series. It only had 2 premieres: one in Canada and one in Australia so i don't think marketing was good enough.
