CD cover analysis- Nirvana Iris.
In my Cd cover for 'Nirvana Iris' the cover is quite simple but still has everything it's required to have. On the front of the Cd cover the background is quite simple; it has a purple background with black faded edges and circle designs which really reflect on the indie genre. I also added the artists name and the name of the album on the front. I then put a circle with the artist's picture in it to look like the actual CD. I also then added the spine of the Cd cover with the same design and the name of the artist and the album cover. I think the front cover is eye catching and will appeal to the targeted audience since it's simple yet colorful which will attract both young adults and adults. The back cover has quite a bit more than the front cover because it's not the first thing the people see in the store so therefore it's not as simple. The back cover has the record label, the songs, the bar code and the copyright information. Even though it's not as eye catching as the front it needs to link in with the front cover but still appeal to the targeted audience; therefore I used two pictures that link in with the artist: one of the artist and the other of and elephant which has an indie theme to it and has the same colours. It then also has 2 purple boxes, the first one on the top right corner has the songs in the album and the record label which i chose to be virgin records. Then on the top left corner there was the bar code and the copyright information. When I did the copyright information i wasn't sure what to write so for that cause i went on the internet and found one and edited it to fit my Cd cover. I also added a silhouette of a hand with a peace sign i feel like that adds a bit a hippie look to the back cover and I really like it. |
CD cover analysis
In CD's there a couple of things needed to make it up. On the front of the CD cover there is always the name of the artist or band and their album name. Sometimes, but not on this one, you'll have the record label on the front but since you can also have it at the back, they tend to put it at the back to make the audience focus on the actual cover instead of the record label. The image at the front of this CD cover id quite simple, there is no pictures of the actual artist they only have colours that have a painted effect. This could be because these colours represent something to the artist or link in with the album songs. The back cover has s similar design with information about the copyright things and the record label on top of the copyrights. It also has a list of the songs and finally a bar code. These things are mainly put at the back so the focus isn't on it and more on the name and the picture/ design. I really like this Cd cover because it's simple but still has that indie taste to it because of the colours. |

DEBUT ALBUM ANALYSIS
This was made for an audience from the ages of 12 onward. I think this would really attract the attention of the younger audience because of the doodles around the poster and the peace sign, but it will also be noticed by a lot of the older audiences because of its simplicity. It meets the expectations of the audience because of the simple colour scheme but also the pop of colour on some icons added to the poster.
The genre this represents is Indie. whenever I think of Indie music I think of a hippie type of feel and this is what I interpreted in my poster. Most Indie artists are influenced by each other and therefore have a similar sound in their music, to in cooperate this, my artist 'Nirvana Iris' is inspire by an indie artist called Grace Slick. I represent the hippie style in quite a stereotypical way, I have peace signs and the artist it self has a bandanna and braids and glitter on her cheekbone which really gives it a stereotypical style of a hippie. Although the clothes are not shown in this shot, the artists was wearing a baggy shirt with a band name and baggy trousers with mehendi designs on it to contemplate the hippie look.
The photograph I took to contemplate the indie genre and the hippie look I think works. The mise-en-scene of this is quite simply a close up of the artist looking down. As I have said before the bandanna and the glitter and the hair, in my opinion has a great effect to represent the Indie genre. I think it would've looked better if the photo had a bit of colour, so not completely black and white, I could've done this using Photoshop. Also the picture was taken at night when there was no lights and therefore was a bit dim. To improve this I tried to edit it to make it seem brighter but the effect it gave was quite odd and didn't really appeal to me. So, I left it as it is but for next time i'll keep in mind to take the photo when it's slightly lighter in the day.

BLACK BEAR POSTER ANALYSIS
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/1/5/111572555/published/c10f6b83ad66b97a208c7a02e85094d4-adam-hills-african-design.jpg?1507782361)
This is a Black bear poster promoting their live show in Austin. In this poster it shows a drawn like skeleton riding a bike in black. While in orange the title 'black bear' is written and also the bear and the dead man in the background. Black associates with darkness, fear and danger so it has a negative connotation while orange represents happiness and joyfulness, and also orange is a mixture of red and yellow and yellow is sunshine and happiness while red could be love and romance but it could also be danger and war so it has a positive connotation besides the red. The background of the poster isn't clear white, it's more of a beige or an of-white colour. I think this is done to make it fit in with the theme of cowboys since the skeletons have cowboy hats on and are holding the rope and a gun.
The poster is framed so that it overlaps the text and the image. This makes it look like there is a lot of things going on, when actually it's quite simple. Even though it looks like a lot is going on, the contrast between the black and orange makes you see the black quite well since it could be the most important thing in the poster.
Also the text in the poster is the same throughout the whole poster only the title and subtitle are quite larger and bolder. While the other information, like the when it is and a small caption is a lot smaller. This is obviously done to show the more important text since it has to be larger and bolder to attracts people' s attention.
The poster is clearly shows that Black Bear will be going to Austin in Texas. Austin is the capital of Texas and also to really link in with the audience, on the poster they have a cowboy theme which is well known for Texas. Having something that appeals to the audience persuades them to come and see the band. Black bear is an American Hip-Hop artist so people in America will know him will since he is based in America. Also, the type music is not appropriate for children, so the type of people that would go and watch it are adults or teens but mostly adults. Stereotypically, more men would go watch this than women since the hip-hop genre is more hard and seem more appealing to women, while women might enjoy a different type of genre like pop or easy listening music
THRILLER - MICHEAL JACKSON ANALYSIS
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/1/5/111572555/published/michael-jackson-thriller-music-video.jpg?250)
Micheal Jackson's mini movie/music video called 'Thriller' which also the genre it's based on based on the zombies and the narrative of the film. The mise-en-scene with the different props and costumes like the grave stones and the scruffy costumes for the zombies. Also, to make it look scarier or spookier the use of smoke and steam is added. Stereotypical American theme is added throughout the whole music video, Michael Jackson costumes as he is wearing an American baseball jacket and the girl wearing a cheerleader out fit which adds to the authentic American style adding realism. This stereotypical realism is also added to appeal to the target audiences.
The target audience of this music videos are teenagers at that time, obviously as the song gets older the audience leads more to adults as per usual. This music video, though it's quite old it was quite popular because of it being the first hit music video by a black artist and therefore it was really significant in the music history and remembered well by a lot of ages.
There are some things that might make it link in with pop music like the dance and the way it's shot like the low angle shot to show Michael Jackson superiority which is conventional of the pop music genre videos these days. Also, the high or bird eye view angle of the shot is very popular now a days, in the Thriller music video that shot was used for the choreography part. Also, another part that adds to the horror theme is the lighting being dim but the characters are wearing quite vibrant colours so they stand out.
The narrative or the story is quite stereotypical at the beginning when the baseball player is with the cheerleader and they like each other. they then get surrounded by zombies while he's walking her home then he turns into a zombie. After that she wakes up realising it was all a dream but Micheal still could really be a zombie.
CSP: Arctic Monkeys
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/1/5/111572555/published/images.jpg?1543478959)
The Arctic Monkeys were a band from Sheffield who released the fastest-selling debut album by a band in UK Chart History. They grew up together and formed a band while still at school, they were not a manufactured band, like other bands, e.g. One direction. Early demo sessions were burned onto CD and distributed free to fans at gigs. Fans were turning up to gigs knowing all the words to songs before they ad released anything yet. Fans later on uploaded early demos songs to an early social media site, MySpace, this spread the word even more, they were one of the first bands to promote and grow their band through social media. Eventually, the Arctic Monkeys released their first songs on their own record label called ‘Bang Bang’ and eventually signed to the independent record label, Domino. Arctic Monkeys exploited the online presence and niche nature of their fan-base by giving their fans demos, and then theses demos were later on social media, even though they didn't do this themselves, they weren't against it. They changed the music industry with their alternative music, and also because it was the first band to promote its music through Social Media.
There are many comparisons with the Arctic Monkeys and one of the most popular and successful bands of all time, The Beatles. The battles and the arctic monkeys both set up their own record label, this shows that they both had artistic and creative control. Also, they both had similar type of music, they were a four piece band, Vocals, guitars and drums. Also, they were both predominantly guitar based, but its more obvious with the Arctic monkeys. Although both were very successful both at home and overseas, the arctic monkeys were not as huge as the Beatles. The arctic monkeys didn't like to preform in big avenues with big audiences, they preferred smaller venues and still do till today. Similarly, The Beatles were only studio based, so they preferred recording more music in a studio and selling it than going on tour and preforming their songs.
The Arctic Monkeys music video to the song "I bet you look good on the dance floor" is a performance video, this is because there actual footage of the band performing the song, addressing the camera. The song is about a girl that he likes and would like to take out. The Arctic Monkeys are seen as authentic and follow codes and conventions of a stereotypical rock/indie band. They take pride in their songs and image more than anything. The lead singer, Alex Turner's opens the monologue with, "Don't believe the hype" which links with the way they want they are very cultural and authentic. The mise-en-scene of the music video is a classical live studio rehearsal which referrers back to classical music TV shows like 'the old grey whistle test'. The actual footage of the video is filmed in the studio to add to the fact that it is authentic . Also, they are all wearing casual clothes which reinforces the 'realness' of the band and that they care more about their song and not the quality and how it is presented, they just want people to listen to their music.
Arctic Monkeys target audience are mostly men although there are still females that listen to them, they would also probably Caucasian as they are located in Sheffield which is a 'white' community. The age of the audience would be around 35-45, this is because they are a slightly older band. Mostly middle class and lower class people would listen to them as they are of a lower social- economic status as well which makes it appeal to the same social- economic status. Because of their authenticity and their culture mostly Reformers would listen to them from the psychometrics as they value their own independent judgment and are anti- materialistic which makes them refer back to the audience. They are very down to earth and average, and focus on the musical aspect rather than the fame. The audience might listen to the Arctic monkeys for different reasons, some could use it for relaxation, diversion, although i think this genre of music is not really suitable for relaxation as it is mostly rock and quite heavy for relaxation. I think they do it for personal relationships because not only do they relate a lot with their target audience, they also talk about a girl and because the target audience is a male audience they would share the interests as most of the audience. Arctic Monkeys try to keep it very cultural and their target audience could be watching their music video or listen to their music for personal identity as it really represents Sheffield and like to be very similar to the region they are playing for their target audience. I Don't think that people watch and listen to them because of surveillance ans it doesn't really give any information, although they do talk about emotions towards a girl and could be a reason but it wouldn't be the main reason why they watch or listen to them. Personally, I think the audience would watch the Arctic Monkeys because of Personal identity as they relate a lot to the audience which makes it realistic for the audience and relates to them and not to unrealistic.
Arctic monkeys were part of the revolution where P2P, which is peer to peer to upload music of the Arctic Monkeys, a law was then set to ban this since it was a loss for the industries because people didn't have to pay to listen to the music. This led to people realizing that they need Spotify, Amazon and other streaming apps. CSP: One Direction
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/1/5/111572555/published/unknown.jpg?1544090006)
One Direction were a boy band, composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The group were created and put together by Simon Cowell in the X factor in 2010. Each member of the One direction band had their own personality, Horan was known as the 'cute little Irish one', Malik was the 'quiet and mysterious one', Payne was the 'sensible one' while Harry was the 'charming one' that all girls liked and Tomlinson was the 'funny one'. Their different individual personalities was all reinforced by their style, so they did't all wear leather like most stereotypical boy bands then, but instead Caroline Watson, their stylist, was trying to achieve a look of the 'male equivalent of spice girls' to reinforce the idea that each one has their own individual style.
History was the 3rd and final single form the fifth album and clearly signposted the end of their journey as a band. The video features clips of the band throughout the years, highlighting their tours and personal anecdotes (including clips with former member Zayn Malik). The video ends as the band walk off in separate directions. This showed them being together as a band and all the 'history' they had together but now they all went off as mostly single artists and preforming individual songs separately. And that was the end of the famous boy band, One Direction.
The music videos a narrative music video to show their life together as a band from the very first day till the paint they split up. This is the music videos certain messages shown shown in the form of a narrative. It starts with images from the X-Factor show to anchor the idea of the 1D journey. It then switches to modern depictions of 1D highlighting their evolution from reality stars to pop stars. Zayn is included (he has left at this point). This references his fans (and him). It then shows the band members showing their bodies. This innocent and safe sexualization of the band caters for that teen audience and their ‘crushes’, it then shows various images of global cities and landmarks to represent the global success of the band. At the end of the video, images of the band and fans hugging, waving and crying represents the emotions felt as they end their journey. Video ends with the band members walking in different directions as they split and pursue solo projects. The music video was made to make sure it makes sense for all the audience, the people that have never heard One Direction and their loyal fans. However, given the context of the song (i.e. their last) there are some assumptions that the directors has made when making it. They are:
The audience response to One direction is a mixture as people love them, hate them or like some aspects but not others, for example they could like their iconography and their image but not their music or visa versa. The preferred reading is when the audience loves 1D and are their loyal fans. Negotiated reading is when they like some aspects but not others., for example someone who is not a fan of 1D, but appreciates the important of the video in terms of the history of the band and of the music industry may fit into this category. Oppositional or resistance readings is when the audience hates all aspects of the band, song, video and iconography. Also, the audience would be dependent on the age, gender ethnicity, culture and situation of an individual. A young teenager would probably like their music as it is popular but is clean at the same time. Girls would be more responsive as the 'normal' or the most common sexuality is heterosexual. The culture would also vary the audience this would depend on where you live and your upbringing and where you are from. Situation also plays a huge impact as iif you watch them with people that like it and is creating a good atmosphere people would watch it with joy although they might not like them normally. The same happens if you are with people that don't recognize and like their music, it won't have the same response, Also, the audience response changes over time, music could also change which will allow us to still like the band or just move on if they don't change.
Now a days music is consumed differently and so people choose what they want to listen too, unlike before were you didn't have much of a choice. This gives 1D an advantage as this means that they can be promoted and reached easily by the consumers. This makes the audience an active audience as they choose the music and have an individual identity. Most bands would start with social media marketing and Website marketing then move onto press interviews, Radio interviews, TV interviews, Music video promotion, public appearances and finally concert tours and live shows. This help promote the music over a long period of time and building up tension to attract the more of the audience. Simon Cowell owns Syco records which has a venture joint with Sony this makes One Direction active in their careers – the name of the band was Harry Styles idea, for example, and they have directed some of their videos. However, the record companies will want to keep a tight control on the representation of the band in the videos. This is especially true of 1D who must be seen to be ‘clean’ and positive representations for their fanbase (and parents).
Arctic monkeys are different to one direction, Arctic Monkeys' had their own Record label, initially their own, Domino records. Their music videos were live recording and they write their own indie rock music. They met while they were young and that's how it was created.
